Project: Texas Children’s Hospital – The Woodlands

>>> Texas Children’s Hospital-The Woodlands (TCH) is a 500,000-square-foot facility, designed to offer pediatric inpatient and outpatient services as well as pediatric emergency services for patients age 21 and younger. The five-story, 60 bed pediatric hospital is linked directly to a six story outpatient building which includes 72 exam rooms and clinics, bringing expert pediatric care closer to The Woodlands than ever before.

The terrazzo scope of work provided by Camarata Masonry Systems, Ltd. (CMS) included the supply and installation of 20,500 sq. ft. of 3/8” epoxy terrazzo flooring in 7 colors including 1,500 lin. ft. of 6” high poured in place epoxy terrazzo coved base throughout the first floor and all lobby monumental grand stairs and plinths. The color palette included custom blends of light neutral with China White Marble chips, Cameo Cream Marble chips & Mother of Pearl chips, dark neutral with China White Marble chips, Cameo Cream Marble chips & Mother of Pearl chips, light green with Enviro Green & ASG Clear glass chips, dark blue with Enviro Blue & ASG Clear glass chips, light orange with ASG Orange & ASG Clear glass chips, light blue with ASG Teal & ASG Clear glass chips, and yellow with ASG Flat Yellow & ASG Clear glass chips, all in #1 & #2 sizes. In addition, approximately 600 sq. ft. of aqua penny round tile was installed on the cylindrical base of the stair.

The interior epoxy terrazzo design aimed to be playful and timeless in order to promote a welcoming environment for patients, families, and staff. The architect envisioned a winding blue stream in the terrazzo floor to connect each building entrance to the welcome desk but also included seven different colors of epoxy terrazzo throughout the hospital. The free form layout of the 1/8” zinc strip that separates the seven different colors of terrazzo required excellent layout precision and skillful bending to accommodate the winding floor pattern. The custom blends were carefully controlled to ensure vibrant color and consistency. Small grinder handwork was required at the base and monumental stairs in order to execute the tight radii.

The lobby monumental grand stair has poured in place terrazzo treads and risers with abrasive insert strips and a plinth that also serves as a continuous lower bench. In keeping with the playful atmosphere, children are attracted to the lobby grand stair which resembles a treehouse growing out of the terrazzo plinth with a “fort” at mid-landing. The cylindrical base of the grand stair, which is clad in aqua penny round tile, resembles a cave and appeals to children as a place to “hide-out”.

The new facility reflects the TCH brand through the use of interior design to portray a child-like, yet elegant environment. CMS is proud to be a part of creating a colorful and playful environment for the children being treated at Texas Children’s Hospital and their families.
