Project: Nederland High School

>>> The new Nederland High School is a landmark development reflecting the Nederland community’s dedication to advancing education through modern, purpose-built facilities. The main entry of Nederland High School showcases 4x8x16 split-face grey granite masonry complemented by cast stone radius arches. Beyond the main entry, the building envelope incorporates a refined blend of masonry elements. The primary facade features Galena King Size Brick accented with a 5-inch bullnose watertable, providing a distinct visual base and functional water-shedding detail. The field brick is Cranberry King Size, offering a rich contrast in color and texture. Given the use of two different mortar colors, extra care was taken during the cleaning process. A controlled washdown procedure was implemented to avoid mortar joint discoloration and to prevent staining of the lighter Galena brick below. Continuous water application during cleaning ensured consistent results and protected the integrity of the masonry finishes.
Unfortunately, the project began during the COVID-19 pandemic; a time marked by unprecedented material delivery lead times and a limited commercial workforce. These challenges caused delays for many trades, especially the structural steel, miscellaneous steel, mechanical, electrical and plumbing subcontractors. Thanks to careful pre-planning and advance purchasing, we were able to provide materials in a timely manner. The impact of delays from precedent trades was mitigated through the use of our extensive workforce and, despite obstacles, our scope of work was successfully completed in time for the 2024 Fall semester. This was accomplished with no accidents or lost time accidents.
